I spent my childhood honing my art (and crafting) skills on the Canadian west coast. Being surrounded by wilderness, as well as my family’s garden and flock of rescue chickens, has helped shape me and has had a huge influence on my creative endeavors. Animals and wildlife are a big feature in my art, usually highlighting the interconnectedness between them and ourselves – often posing them in more “human” situations – it’s their world, and we’re just living in it!
My work attempts to evoke an emotional response, either through the materials used, or in the form of laughter, through my quirky illustrations.
After graduating art school with a degree in graphic design, I found myself returning to more handmade skills such as crochet, sewing, drawing, and now pottery.
In our current fast paced culture, I really appreciate the slow practice of these skills. There’s an added level of intention when something is made by hand that I really appreciate. I love the humanness embodied in these mediums – the beauty in the imperfections and their tactile nature, even right down to the artist’s fingerprints.
